Driftwood creations ideas were on our mind during a recent creative morning on a rainy and chilly day. We’d wanted to photograph two of our latest driftwood creations outdoors at home that morning, but it was raining, and quite chilly.

A customer had ordered one of our “Eco-Edu” toys – a driftwood educational counting toy – and we’d told the customer that we would make two driftwood creations, then take some photos, email her the photos, and then she could choose her favorite driftwood educational counting toy.

We wanted to get done with the order, and already had the two driftwood creations all ready the day before, now just to photograph them – so we set up an area for taking photographs in our lounge – we placed a large light cream colour piece of material over a couch for the background.

Once we started taking photographs, driftwood creations ideas started flowing in our heads. Since the numbers 1 to 5 are on only one side of the driftwood educational counting toys, the base (either a driftwood piece or a wood offcut piece) could be used as a driftwood decor item too, if the number side was turned to face a wall.

One could insert anything into the 5 holes to create a driftwood decor item. One could even just leave the 15 driftwood pieces in the 5 holes, and still have a driftwood decor item

– but what other driftwood creations ideas or decor ideas could we come up with? We wanted to show people some driftwood creations ideas or decor ideas to help encourage them to buy our educational counting toy! Once a child has outgrown their “Eco-Edu” toy, their parents can use it as a driftwood decor item.

Well, we sell pine decor blocks too, and when we are trading at a local craft market (in or near East London in South Africa), we display some pine blocks at our stall, some with inserted beach theme items or natural items for giving people display or decor ideas.

So we used some of those pine decor blocks items or ideas – for inserting items into the holes in the wood offcut base or driftwood base of the educational counting toy – beach theme or natural items like: pieces of a dried banana tree leaf, driftwood pieces, candles, sea glass, sea shells, dry grasses, feathers, etc

And More Driftwood Creations Ideas came to us!

Then we also thought that the driftwood piece would look great and serve a useful purpose too if folks used the 5 small holes to plant some small herbs in. We had some herbs growing in the garden, rosemary, lavender, parsley and thyme so just used a few pieces of each one and positioned them in place with a few pieces of sea glass – hmmm, almost a Scarborough Fair bundle of herbs – with lavender instead of sage – so not quite parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme!


Then we started thinking about driftwood weddings too, or beach theme weddings. Wedding planners and florists may try to get pieces of driftwood for their driftwood wedding table centerpiece arrangements that have natural crevices, cracks or holes in them – driftwood pieces that are perhaps not always easy to come by. What’s wrong with a driftwood piece that has holes drilled into it, and has other driftwood pieces inserted into those holes? That can be used as a base for a driftwood wedding table centerpiece too! Depending on how the driftwood wedding table centerpiece is done, and what plants and flowers or other items are used, those drilled holes don’t even need to be visible.

While it was raining and chilly outside, we were getting all warm and cosy inside with our driftwood creations ideas and driftwood decor ideas! We were also warm from activity – even though we did pop outside a few times to collect some dry grasses, herbs and other items from the garden – we were being active and creative, and tried to take great photos too.

Nearly 4 hours later, pleased with our creative work and photography, we let our two cats out the bathroom, made coffee, and were ready to start on the marketing aspect of our work ! 🙂
